New Safety Requirements for Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Changes to the Ontario Fire Code related to carbon monoxide came into effect on January 1, 2026.

Carbon monoxide, often called the “silent killer,” is an invisible, tasteless, and odourless gas that can be deadly. In Ontario, over 65% of carbon monoxide-related injuries and deaths occur in the home.

Updated carbon monoxide alarm requirements for existing homes — including detached and semi-detached houses, townhomes, and cottages — took effect January 1, 2026.

You must have carbon monoxide alarms if:

• You have a fireplace

• You have a fuel-burning appliance (like a furnace, water heater, or stove)

• You have heated air that comes from a fuel-burning appliance not located inside your home

Where to install CO alarms:

• Adjacent to each sleeping area (near all bedrooms)

• On every storey of your home, even those without bedrooms

Who’s responsible?

• Homeowners – for owner-occupied homes

• Landlords – for rental properties

✅ Choose alarms with a recognized certification mark (CSA, ULC, or ETL) and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
